collecting for the blind (c.1947)

Not long after my mother’s death, her godson sent me a photograph of her with his mother. There was no caption but the image was obviously of our two mothers. When and where was the photograph taken?

However, handwriting on the back of the photograph was revealing. There was no date but once the image was printed the right way around, identifying the place became easier. The bridge turned out to be The Royal Albert Bridge and the river not surprisingly, The Thames. This made sense as the bridge is located near Chelsea (an area both women were known to visit). Although no date was given, the mention of Geranium Day does help to give some context; the collections were arranged by The London Fund for the Blind now known as The Vision Foundation who have featured this photograph on their social media
